ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Although there is no exact definition of what it means, artificial intelligence is the name given to a series of technologies with characteristics or capabilities that were previously unique to the human intellect.

The term is applied when a machine mimics the cognitive functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as learning or problem solving, etc. In simple terms, artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems or machines that mimic human intelligence to perform tasks and that have the ability to iteratively improve on the information they collect. AI manifests itself in a number of ways. Some examples are:

  • Chatbots that use AI to understand customer problems faster and provide more efficient responses
  • Smart assistants use AI to analyze critical information from large free text data sets to improve scheduling
  • Recommendation engines can provide automated recommendations for TV shows based on users' viewing habits

AI is much more about the process and ability of superpowered thinking and data analysis than it is about any particular format or function. Although AI shows images of high-functioning human-looking robots taking over the world, AI is not intended to replace humans. Its goal is to significantly enhance human capabilities and contributions. That makes it a very valuable business asset.

AI has become an umbrella term for applications that perform complex tasks that previously required human input, such as communicating online with customers or playing chess. The term is often used interchangeably with its subfields, which include autonomous learning and deep learning. However, there are certain differences. For example, machine learning focuses on building systems that learn or improve their performance based on the data they consume. It is important to note that although all machine learning is AI, not all AI is machine learning.

What is artificial intelligence for?

Artificial intelligence has been used in a wide number of fields such as robotics, language understanding and translation, word learning, etc. The main and most prominent fields where we can find a notorious evolution of artificial intelligence are:

  • Computer's science
  • Finance
  • Hospitals and medicine
  • Heavy industry
  • Customer Service
  • Transportation
  • Games

Advantage

  • It allows machines to automatically do tasks that humans find repetitive and tedious.
  • By reducing human intervention in certain processes, you eliminate the chances that they can make mistakes. For example, a mistake when entering a data in the accounting of a business.
  • By freeing workers from repetitive and unmotivating tasks, their minds are much freer to engage in the creative process.
  • By being able to make decisions on its own, artificial intelligence leads to much more efficient production processes with a lower error rate.
  • Artificial intelligence is capable of analyzing miles of data in just minutes and also taking into account updates. Well-synthesized and up-to-date information helps professionals make strategic decisions.
  • A very important advantage of Artificial Intelligence is that it allows carrying out dangerous tasks without putting human lives at risk. For example, deactivation of explosive materials, handling of potentially infectious biological materials or, for example, work that has to be carried out in environments with radiation.
  • Another advantage associated with the use of machines with Artificial Intelligence is that they can replace humans in tedious or repetitive tasks, as for example already happens in many production lines. In this way, human beings can focus on jobs of greater responsibility and that provide them with greater value from a work point of view.
  • Artificial Intelligence can work with sensitive data without the risk of misuse of it. For example, bank or financial details.

Disadvantages

  • For an artificial intelligence to work properly it must have up-to-date and reliable data, but this is not always the case. Therefore, one of the main challenges to address is to ensure that these systems can access the data they need at all times.
  • One of the drawbacks of this technology is that its development is not being as fast as it should because there is a lack of well-qualified professionals who can implement the necessary adjustments.
  • Although artificial intelligences applied to the field of medicine, production, business management, etc. they can be very useful, their development still has a very high cost, which means that they are not accessible to everyone.
  • Unlike what happens with human beings, machines that work with Artificial Intelligence lack their adaptive capacity. For example, in crisis situations or in changing environments, machines have very limited adaptability and problem solving. However, this is a problem that, probably in the future, can be solved thanks to Machine Learning. Although, for now, it is still a significant disadvantage when talking about Artificial Intelligence.
  • Although the use of Artificial Intelligence can encourage human beings to focus on more complex and more responsible tasks, in many cases, its use can lead to unemployment. This is especially a problem in the case of less skilled jobs, where smart machines are far more efficient at carrying them out than any human worker.
  • Currently, the use of machines equipped with Artificial Intelligence is still high. Therefore, its application requires a high financial outlay, in addition to the cost derived from its maintenance. However, this is a problem that can be solved as the technology necessary for its manufacture and use is democratized and its development becomes cheaper.
  • Another disadvantage of using Artificial Intelligence is that it lacks the ability to distinguish between good and evil. Intelligent machines are limited only to perform the task for which they have been programmed. Therefore, their actions depend solely on prior programming, without being able to make value judgments in the event that they are used in a morally questionable way.

With artificial intelligence the advantages and disadvantages are there and it is necessary to assess what weighs more. Considering the way in which they can improve the way they work in very different sectors, it is clear today that they spread more benefits than drawbacks.

ONE APPLICATION TO LIFE

The first thing we see in smartphones, we use it in many ways and in this you can see a clear representation of AI, either with Siri, Google Assistant, when you do a search by voice, it is also seen in the social networks, most of the notifications and content received through social networks are selected by artificial intelligence.
